21 consignments of the Moderna vaccine damaged during transport to Michigan

LANSING, Mich. (WXYZ) – Several shipments of the Moderna vaccine arriving in Michigan have been compromised due to a storage problem, Michigan State Police said in a release Tuesday.

A total of 21 shipments from McKesson Corporation, a pharmaceutical distributor, were affected during transportation on Sunday, January 17th. It is reported that the temperature of the loads is out of reach and too cold. Now McKesson is investigating the cause.

This delay contributes to problems already occurring with the distribution process in the counties of Oakland, Macomb and Wayne.

Trying to get the vaccine was not easy, but just getting a spot really comes down to the draw. People who want the vaccine are frustrated and they are worried about when they can get it.

“I can not even get through. I have not even spoken to anyone yet, ”said Karie Wilson, a teacher at Merritt Academy in Macomb County.

Wilson tried to get the vaccine as soon as the state started in phase 1B.

“I called 163 times today and never got the recording,” she said.

Wilson says it’s frustrating not to be able to book a time, but it’s even more frustrating not to know when a time is coming.

“There are not enough appointments for everyone who is currently able to get a vaccine,” said De Joneigh Khaldun, chief executive of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

Dr. Khaldun appeared on 7 UpFront on Tuesday and talked about the impact of the Moderna cargo, which was destroyed due to temperature control issues.

“So all of these shipments were really shipped with McKesson today and we know they’re arriving at the 21 sites,” I said. The biggest problem we have is that there are simply not enough vaccines to go around. ‘

Karie Wilson says she understands that provinces do not get the vaccine doses they want, but says something still needs to be done.

“We can not even get on a waiting list or anything,” Wilson said. ‘So I feel that if there is a better system, it is not so worrying, then we feel that at least in the process, we are in line to essentially get a dose. ‘

Dr. Khaldun says they have been in contact with the Biden administration and have requested more vaccines in Michigan. We will wait and see.

McKesson is now repackaging additional vaccines to send out as replacement doses. The majority of the 21 consignments that were compromised were stirred again on Monday night and the rest will be shipped on Tuesday.

The company says a further six deliveries have been withheld to check if there are any problems with the vaccine. This can cause a delay in scheduled vaccinations.

The Department of Health and Human Services in Michigan has been notified.

“We are committed to accelerating the delivery of vaccines, as we aim to vaccinate 70% of Michiganders over the age of 16 with the safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible,” said Dr Joneigh Khaldun said. . ‘Although it is unfortunate that this vaccine cannot be used, we are glad that the precautions put in place to ensure the integrity of the vaccine are working. This is the first report of the vaccine that may be compromised during shipping in Michigan, and we are working quickly with the distributor to have replacement vaccine shipped. ”
