FOOTHILL FARMS (CBS13) – A woman from Foothill Farms has died and her adult son is arrested for killing her in her senior apartment on Tuesday night.
The confrontation led to a massive response by Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies, who exchanged gunfire with the suspect before surrendering.
According to the sheriff’s deputies, the house in the 5400 block of Auburn Boulevard was called to the house for a domestic dispute between family members. When the deputies arrived on the scene, they said gunshots rang out in an apartment unit. Delegates fired back and retreated, causing an unconditional situation.
Linda Elmore says she was in the hallways when deputies told her to return to her unit for her own safety.
“Massive,” Elmore said. “I’ve never seen so many police cars at once.”
Around 6 p.m., the sheriff warned the public to stay away from the area while negotiators responded to the scene. In a tweet, the sheriff said there was a “large police presence in the 5400 block of Auburn Blvd for an armed, cordoned-off subject.”
The mother and another family member both called the sheriff’s office for help.
Leslie Marinello lives in the senior apartment complex and heard the shots from her home.
“Oh man, yes, when they left, it was a hundred at a time, I’ve never heard anything like it,” Marinello said.
Deputies eventually called in a hostage negotiator and the suspect surrendered. The violent confrontation took place just a day after a deputy of the sheriff was killed in the line of duty.
“At the end of the day, set aside delegates who have been going for the past few days, and they come out and do what these professional men and women do,” Sergeant Rod Grassman said in Sacramento.
The suspect in this shooting was taken to a hospital with a superficial gunshot wound. The Sacramento sheriff did not immediately identify him.
