The marketing department of Netflix is pleased to announce that the streaming service will debut at least one new movie every week in 2021. This is perhaps an attempt to deduce from the fact that while Warner Bros., Disney and NBC Universal, etc. have their own streaming services (HBO Max, Disney +, Peacock), Netflix’s lead of non-original content is getting thinner by the month.
So, if these are not recent big movies that are dragging you in, what will you get for your subscriber dollars in February? The biggest benefit of the month is Malcom & Marie (February 5), a buzzing film starring Zendaya (fresh from her best actress Emmy win for HBOs Euphoria) and John David Washington and written and directed by Euphoria creator Sam Levinson. Netflix north of $ 30 million paid for film after it sparked a bidding war in the aftermath of its (virtual) premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in 2020. Netflix hopes the small-scale story about two actors returning home from the premiere of their film to respond to the critical announcements to wait. attracts the attention of voters notorious by the self-absorbed industry.
If you do not fancy solipsistic black and white nails, there is To All the boys: always and forever (February 12), the third entry in the epic YA rom-com trilogy that began To all the boys I’ve loved before. Next week, Rosamund Pike and Dianne Wiest take the lead in the thriller of elder abuse. I care a lot (February 19), which is the first time anyone has ever made a slick thriller for parental abuse.
Here’s all that’s Netflix (and departure) coming in February 2021.
