Children’s Hospital sees improvement in COVID-19-related MISC cases

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – A COVID warning when it comes to young people. Children’s Hospital and Medical Center sees its largest number of cases of what is called MISC.

It is the rare, complex syndrome that is linked to the virus, which can inflame the child’s heart and other organs.

As vaccinations continue across the country, young people are last on the list. Experts believe the recent rise is related to holiday travel and events.

For most of the summer, Childrens had two patients a month with MISC. In December, they had ten.

January will surpass that.

Dr. Pediatric cardiologist Jean Ballweg said: ‘We know that more than 50% of our pediatric patients have MIS-C heart disease and that they are serious. Some of our kids had to be on a heart-lung machine. Many had to intubate and IV medicine to support the heart. We have a follow-up program and will continue one year after dismissal. I suspect that people with heart problems will follow indefinitely. ”

What is really a problem for doctors for pediatric heart is that no one knows the long-term implications of this syndrome.

They want it to be a reminder to be vigilant to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
