Cargo ship sinks near Turkey, kills at least 3, officials say

According to Turkish state media, a cargo ship sank on the Turkish Black Coast near the northern province of Bartin on Sunday, killing at least three people.

Emergency workers rescued at least six of the ship’s 12 crew members, the Arvin, according to Sinan Guner, the governor of Bartin, quoted by the state-run Anadolu agency. Helicopters were sent to assist with the efforts, Mr. Guner said.

The ship was on its way to the port of Burgas in Bulgaria, Anadolu said, referring to the Turkish Ministry of Transport. It had left Poti, Georgia, days before.

The local media reported that the ship carried the flag of Palau, and the crew consisted of ten Ukrainians and two Russians.

The ministry said the ship was anchored in Bartin’s harbor on Friday due to bad weather.

The video shared by the Anadolu Agency showed the ship being visible from a beach ripped through waves.
