A Chinese restaurant in Montreal is enjoying an increase in orders after candid descriptions on the menu went viral on social media. Cuisine Aunt Dai, located in Saint Mathieu St. 1448, serves dishes available in many other places, but takes a unique approach by apparently “reviewing” itself before customers could do so.
“Compared to our General Tao chicken, this is not that good,” owner Feigang Fei writes about their recipe “Orange Beef”. “Anyway, I’m not a big fan of North American Chinese food, and that’s your call.” Meanwhile, the description of ‘Sweet and Spicy Pork Strips’ reads in part: “Since I have such high expectations about this dish, I’m not, if I am honest, a big fan of our version. Do not get me wrong, the plate at our restaurant is also very tasty, it differs only of those where I went to university. ‘ Fei, a former IT engineer, immigrated to Canada about 14 years ago. He opened Aunt Dai of Cuisine in 2014. The restaurant’s cruelly honest menu stems from Fei’s frustration when early customers return their food uneaten. “Some customers who did not try certain dishes were amazed at the level of spice or texture,” he told The Guardian. Since then, Fei has written honest article descriptions. For their ‘Mouth-Watering Chicken’ he admits that they are “not 100% satisfied with the taste” and vows to make it better “really soon.” “If I do not like it, I tell people I do not like it so much,” Fei told Global News. “Some items I brag about a bit, but for me it’s just natural.”
Aunt Dai now sees an increase in customers for creative entrepreneur Kim Belair shared from his menu last week on Twitter. “Aunt Dai is my favorite Chinese restaurant in Montreal, but the REAL delicacy is the menu with extremely honest comments from the owner.”
