The Orange County Health Care Agency reported 47 new deaths related to the coronavirus attack on Sunday, January 17th.
The daily death toll does not show an exact snapshot of exactly how many people died on any given date. Rather, the count contains deaths that occurred days in advance based on death certificates and completed case investigations.
Two days ago, Friday, the country reported a one-day record of 82 deaths.
Of the deaths counted Sunday, six were residents of competent nursing homes and eight residents were assisted. No one was a prisoner in Orange County. Thirty-three people who died did not live in facilities.
On Sunday, 538 people with COVID-19 were under treatment in the intensive care units of Orange County Hospital.
Southern California’s availability of the ICU bed for coronavirus patients is still at zero, in a formala that does not reflect beds still open to patients in other life-threatening emergencies. The unadjusted figure shows 7.9% of ICU beds available.
The province on Sunday reported 1,488 new cases of coronavirus – less than half the sum of 3,454. In total, nearly 211,000 Orange County residents tested positive for coronavirus.
Orange County and all of California have experienced an explosion of cases since the fall before Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings and travel resulted in an uninterrupted resurgence. Two months ago, on November 17, the province reported 352 new cases – a figure that would soon increase more than tenfold.
Hospitals have struggled to meet the drastically increased demand – they have added temporary units in parking lots to accommodate extra beds.
Due to the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday, the OC Health Care Agency will only announce new numbers again on Tuesday, January 19th.
