GTA 5 actors recreate one of the game’s most iconic memes in live action

When Grand Theft Auto V was released in 2013, Lamar’s ‘yee yee ass haircut’ roasted a hit, gripping gamers as an expression of disgust. In 2020, the meme was revived when people started remixing the scene and replaced Lamar with fictional characters ranging from Spongebob to Darth Vader. Now the meme has reached its peak, with the original voice actors from the game reuniting to recreate it in person.

The GTA 5 actors Slink Johnson and Shawn Fonteno (who provided both voice and motion recording for their characters) interpret the scene with impressive attention to detail. After being uploaded through the YouTube channel PlayStation Haven, it was viewed nearly 2.5 million times in less than 24 hours. The meme has a page about Know Your Meme, as well as an Urban Dictionary definition of “yee yee ass”.

The new video was made to promote an upcoming PlayStation Haven web series, GTA V Real-Life Comparisons. The series, presented by Slink Johnson, compares GTA’s setting Los Santos to its real inspiration, the city of Los Angeles. The surrounding desert also appears in GTA V. This is the second major game in the series that includes the state of San Andreas after Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

It’s a little disturbing to see this happen in real life. Many of us are so used to seeing the digitized versions of the characters that it seems almost less realistic to see the actors.
