The New York bus hangs out of the road following an accident in which at least seven people were injured

The tandem bus now hangs over the driveway below, the NYPD said.

According to the NYPD, the crash happened Thursday night near midnight on the Cross Bronx Expressway and University Avenue. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, police said.

“The bus fell about 50 feet on the driveway,” FDNY deputy chief Paul Hopper said on the New York Fire Department’s Instagram account.

It is still unclear whether the accident was caused by an operator fault or a mechanical malfunction and no arrests have been made so far, police added.

Streets near the crash site have now been closed and officials say traffic in the area has been delayed. Heavy towing vehicles at the scene are preparing to remove the hanging bus, according to police.

“Currently, we are making sure that all the fuel and other hazardous substances in the vehicle are secured until the bus can be pulled onto the driveway,” Steven Moore, acting battalion commander of FDNY, said on Instagram.

The Metropolitan Transport Authority has issued a statement.

“If an incident like this happens, we take it very seriously. We are investigating a full investigation and will implement lessons we have learned to prevent it from happening again. We are sure it was a frightening incident for the “Our hearts go out to them in the hope that they can recover quickly,” said MTA chief security officer Patrick Warren.

This is an evolving story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
