Fact test: No, this is not a rehearsal by protest farmers for the January 26 tractor meeting

Thousands of farmers protesting against the three new agricultural laws earlier this month staged a tractor march on January 26, Indian Republic Day, to intensify the ongoing protests. Some of the protesting farmers also took part in tractor marches on the highways around Delhi on January 7 and called it an exercise before the main event.

Below is a 59 second video of a beautiful tractor march viral on social media, claiming that it shows the preparations for the farmers’ upcoming tractor march.

The caption in Hindi on one such video translates into: ‘The preparations for the parade on 26 January have been completed. Jai Kisan. ”

India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) found the video along with the claim misleading. The video in question comes from a Christmas parade that takes place annually in Ireland and has been circulating on social media at least since December 2020. This is even before the farmers announced the tractor march on 2 January 2021.

Using a keyword search, we found a longer and better quality version of the same video released on December 16, 2020 on the Facebook page of Agricultural business in Delta.

According to the description of the video in question, the scene comes from an annual Christmas carol in Ireland.

“Christmas tractor run. They know how to turn it on in Ireland. Check out this annual Christmas tractor run. #santasleigh #tractor #thispartyislit # 10outof10, ”reads the description to the video.

According to some news reports, the protesting farmers’ unions in India only announced the tractor parade on 2 January 2021. However, the video in question is available on various social media platforms at least since December 2020.

If you watch the video closely, you can see that the tractors in the video are decorated with candles, as well as other Christmas elements such as the Christmas trees, reindeer and the snowman.

We also could not find any credible reports about tractor marches being organized in India in the context of Christmas, as seen in the viral video.

According to some others reports, over the years, Christmas carols have become a regular feature in rural Ireland. Also this year, a rally of tractors was held in rural County Tipperary, run by North Tipperary agricultural contractors, as part of an annual Nenagh tractor parade. Nenagh, the second largest city in County Tipperary, also means The Fair.

The reports says due to the Covid-19 restrictions, the Nenagh event was pre-filmed and seen on social media on December 19th.

The video of the Nenagh Tractor Parade 2020 can be seen here.

Another well-known tractor driven in Ireland, the Livingstone Cherry tractor barrel – also invited photos and video entries for a virtual tractor to be presented in December 2020.

AFWA also shared the video in question AgriLand, one of Ireland’s largest farming news portals. An AgriLand spokesperson confirmed to us that the video is indeed from Ireland.

‘This video is from Ireland. It’s hard to know where the video was taken because the video is of low quality, so I can not read the license plates on the trucks in the videos, but it looks like Irish license plates. “Every year a very popular tractor is driven in Nenagh in Tipperary, where it can come from,” the spokesperson said.

We were unable to independently verify the exact location of the video in question. However, it is clear that the video is part of a Christmas caravan being driven from Ireland. It was in circulation even before the farmers’ unions in India announced the tractor march on 26 January.
