Mississippi officials said the state’s coronavirus vaccines ran out after vaccination appointments made its entire offering.
Mississippi Department of Health (MSDH) said in a statement Wednesday that the vaccine distribution plan has changed significantly over the past few days, especially over the past 24 hours.
“Neither the provincial health department’s drive-through websites nor the vaccine scheduling website for the UMMC are designed to accommodate the monumental boom we are currently experiencing,” the department said. “Right now we have no extra vaccine, and every appointment is linked to an actual vaccination.”
The department said it hopes to revive a large amount of doses by mid-February, adding that it will keep residents informed of additional doses.
‘Mississippians need to understand that we can only vaccinate residents based on the availability of vaccines. We will open additional vaccination appointments as we receive more vaccination, ”MSDH wrote.
‘Meanwhile, all Mississippians – whether vaccinated or not – must continue to follow the protective guidelines. Especially avoid social gatherings. And always wear a mask, ”he added.
The shortage comes a day after government Tate Reeves (R) extended vaccinations to people 65 and older, as well as those with a pre-existing condition.
The Biloxi Sun Herald reported that Reeves promised to open vaccines to first responders and teachers next week. The governor wanted to get as many people into his arms quickly and easily as possible.
The newspaper notes that the hotline and website of MSDH, as well as several hospitals, run out of Wednesday’s appointments.
Mississippi is not the only state to be eligible for COVID-19 vaccine, in an effort to get vaccinations going quickly.
