In 2003, terrorism was an immediate national danger as infectious diseases. Dr Anthony Fauci’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) has just diverted $ 117 million from infectious diseases to fund a new attempt at anthrax vaccine in response to the anthrax attacks that took place a week after 9/11 .
The millions were just a small part of the $ 1.8 billion that Fauci had poured into the defense of bioterrorist attacks during the previous two years. More than half of these funds were spent only on anthrax and smallpox. In 2004, Fauci launched the $ 5.6 billion Project Bioshield, the National Institutes of Health’s largest expenditure on a single research issue to date.
However, according to the journal Nature, some microbiological researchers at the time were concerned that Fauci’s actions would eventually distort priority in research on infectious diseases and suck money away from work to understand and counteract natural disease outbreaks that eventually lead to a larger public health threat. “The 2003 Nature article quoted a Stanford University microbiologist as saying:” diseases such as flu and other respiratory infections often kill far more people than would die in a bioterrorist attack, and therefore ‘ earn a larger share of the NIAID budget. “
The criticism seems to be justified. In 2007, after spending billions under the opposite premise, Fauci admits that ‘at the end of the day, you’re not going to kill so many people. [with an anthrax attack] as you would if you blew up some car bombs in Times Square. ‘His anthrax vaccine attempt failed because he was sunk’ by lobbying ‘.
The failure of anthrax followed Fauci’s controversial leadership of the country’s AIDS response in the 1980s and ’90s. According to ‘Good Intentions’, a book by investigative author and innovation expert Bruce Nussbaum from 1990, Fauci began his career as a flawed scientist, finding ‘his true calling – empire building’ when he joined the reins in 1984. Adopted NIAID.
To ensure that AIDS would be his sole purpose in the federal government, Fauci began “the most important bureaucratic struggle in the history of the fight against AIDS,” and selected more scientifically competent but less complex executives. According to Nussbaum, if Fauci did not win the battle, “many people who died would have lived.”
After winning his monopoly on AIDS in the federal government, he trained an immunologist who focused on fighting infections, and he approached a vaccine in the fight against the then terminal disease. This understandable professional bias comes at the expense of research on the antiretroviral drugs that ultimately reduced AIDS from a death sentence to a chronic disease in remission. As Nussbaum wrote in 1990:
Tony Fauci’s incompetence in management cost a huge amount of money. By 1987, more than a million Americans were infected with the AlDS virus. Not a single drug treatment has come out of the enormous biomedical research system. In the end, Fauci barely survived by handing over control of the government’s only AIDS drug testing program. [to a pharmaceutical company].
Consequently, a single drug, AZT, was the only AIDS treatment that came out of the government’s research system, and only after help from the private sector. In 1988, playwright and prominent AIDS activist Larry Kramer published an ‘Open Letter to Dr. Anthony Fauci ‘in the Village Voice, who writes in part:
You’ve admitted that you’re an incompetent idiot. Over the past four years, $ 374 million has been allocated for AIDS treatment research. You were responsible for spending a lot of the money. . . . After three years, however, you have just instituted a system of waste, chaos and uselessness.
According to “Good Intentions”, in an effort to tarnish his reputation, if not his career, Fauci summed up Kramer, becoming the best ally of the federal government in the public health apparatus of the federal government. Kramer, in turn, was Fauci’s “vector” in elitist American society, and perfectly positioned the technocrat for his favorite role as an everyday guy, “according to an unnamed health official from Nussbaum. .
As the research strategy for AIDS treatment continued to have setbacks, Fauci focused on the development of an HIV vaccine. However, this quest offers less and less glory as the 1990s progress. From 1995, at the beginning of the millennium, the private industry began to develop effective drug therapies that would drastically reduce AIDS mortality in the developed world, making the HIV vaccine much less of a potential game changer. While the threat of bioterrorism has restored Fauci’s reputation in national politics, the threat of bioterrorism or the anthrax vaccine has never materialized.
Things got even worse for Fauci before it got better. On February 3, 2020, Science magazine reported that Fauci’s “failure-search for a vaccine that could stop the AIDS virus had yielded another frustrating defeat after nearly four decades.” According to the scientist at the head of the study in South Africa, “[t]there is absolutely no evidence of effectiveness here ”from the $ 104 million study. ‘Years of work has gone into this. This is a big disappointment. ”
Fauci admitted to Science that all the years and millions have been spent on an effort he knows would most likely not succeed: ‘We have struggled for years and years, and therefore we have seized the slightest positive effect, a possible link between immunity and it seemed interesting. However, Fauci only became flammable, and the first American COVID-19 patient was only diagnosed a week earlier.
‘I always said [a respiratory illness like COVID-19] would be my worst nightmare, ”he claimed in June. But only a few months earlier, Fauci had told Americans that the danger of the Wuhan virus, simply that he was the biggest fear, was ‘just’ small ‘,’ so there is absolutely no reason to wear a mask. “The media has buried years of scientific concern that Fauci ‘sucked money away from work to understand and counteract natural disease outbreaks.’
In a hagiography from March 2020, published in the style of the Washington Post, it is noted how the brave doctor these days is again a kind of man who looks at the front page every day, who ‘apparently transcends time and space and in all media at all times. The newspaper quoted Steny Hoyer, leader of the House Majority, as saying: “It is a pity that we did not just say to Tony Fauci for the first tip: ‘You are in charge, you have all the necessary power. “Tell us what needs to be done.”
The first COVID-19 vaccine approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration was developed by Pfizer scientists, who received no money from Fauci’s NIAID. “All the investments in R & D and manufacturing have been jeopardized by Pfizer,” says the company.
Thirty years ago, Nussbaum correctly diagnosed the primary cause of Fauci’s many setbacks:
[T]the best scientists do not become administrators. The best scientists do not become coordinators of programs for other scientists in medical schools across the country. The best scientists stay in the labs, they do not print paper.
Fauci is an excellent politician who has survived four decades and five presidents – two Democrats and three Republicans. Given the mental acuity of the country’s future president, and the constant anxiety among the citizens, it seems that the politically capable but scientifically incompetent Fauci government is not going to leave any time soon.
