Vogue magazine engaged in a ‘whitewash controversy’ on Sunday when it tweeted photos of its front page star Kamala Harris in February.
Two images of the elected US vice president has been released. The one, a full-length recording in front of a glossy pink silk cloth, drew criticism on social media.
One user has it a ‘washed out rubbish from a lid”.
“Kamala Harris is about as light as the colors of women and Vogue still fucked up her lighting,” the observer wrote.
Others criticized Vogue’s editor-in-chief.
“What a mess,” wrote New York Times contributor Wajahat Ali. ‘Anna Wintour really may not have black friends and colleagues. I will be taking free recordings of VP Kamala Harris with my Samsung and I am 100% confident that it will come out better than this Vogue cover. ”
Last year, Wintour apologized in a letter to staff for “errors” in publishing photos and articles considered insensitive to minorities.
“Vogue has not found enough ways to elevate or give space to black editors, writers, photographers, designers and other creators,” Wintour wrote. ‘We also made mistakes and published images or stories that were hurtful or intolerant. I want to take full responsibility for those mistakes. ”
Vogue denied to the New York Post that it lightened Harris’ skin after the recording, but the assurance did not suppress the wave of disapproval.
‘The photo itself is not terrible as a photo. This is very far below the standards of Vogue. They did not think about it. As the homework is done this morning, ”said LGBTQ activist Charlotte Clymer tweeted.
Vogue has not confirmed which of the two photos he will use for the cover, or whether it will publish both. Each photo was taken by Tyler Mitchell, who was 23 when he gained notoriety for photographing Beyoncé for Vogue in 2018.
According to the Post, Harris and her team controlled her clothing, hair and makeup. She chooses her own comfortable black jacket and pants and a pair of Converse Chuck Taylor boots for one photo, a powder blue Michael Kors pantsuit for the other.
Harris’ appearance on the Vogue cover is likely to attract the attention of Donald Trump, who last month complained that his model wife, First Lady Melania Trump, did not praise a single magazine cover in his four years in the White House. “Elitist snobs” in the fashion industry.
Former first lady Michelle Obama has appeared in numerous fashion photos, including the cover of Vogue in December 2016.
