Dallas County reports 2,590 cases of coronavirus, 20 deaths; state obtains records for deaths, hospitalizations

Dallas County on Thursday reported another 2,590 cases of coronavirus and 20 deaths because COVID-19 hospitalizations in the country were at a record high again.

Across the country, hospitalizations reached a new high of 13,784, which continued a steady, months-long increase, and officials reported a one-day record of 393 deaths due to the virus.

Ten of the most recent victims in Dallas County were Dallas residents: a man in his 30s, a man in his 40s, a man and a woman in their 50s, two women in their 60s, a man in his 70s and a man and two women in their 80s. Two of them – the men in their thirties and fifties – did not have high-risk health conditions, and two others – the woman in her 50s and the man in his 70s – lived in long-term care facilities.

Five of the victims lived in Mesquite: a woman in her 40s, two men in their 60s, a man in his 70s and a man in his 80s. All five had underlying health conditions.

The other victims were a Balch Springs man in his 60s, a DeSoto woman in her 70s, a Farmers branch man in his 70s, a Garland man in his 60s and a Seagoville woman in her 70s. Everyone except the Garland man had underlying health conditions.

County Judge Clay Jenkins said in a written statement that the death of the Dallas man in his 30s “is a gloomy reminder that COVID can hit everyone.”

Jenkins also took note of the latest coronavirus modeling from UT Southwestern Medical Center, which by January 19 is projecting approximately 3,500 new daily cases, as well as 1,150 to 1,870 hospitalizations at that time.

Of the new cases reported Thursday, 2,207 are confirmed and 383 likely. The newly reported cases bring the province’s total confirmed cases to 186 181 and probable cases to 23 211. The province recorded 1,735 deaths due to COVID-19.

Health officials use hospitalizations, admissions to intensive care and visits to emergencies as key statistics to track the real-time impact of COVID-19 in the country. In the 24-hour period that ended Wednesday, a record 1,166 COVID-19 patients were in acute care in hospitals across the country. During the same period, 592 ER visits were for symptoms of the disease.

Statewide data

Across the state, 24,578 more cases and 393 COVID-19 deaths were reported Thursday, including 23,918 new cases and 660 older cases recently reported by laboratories. Texas has now reported 1,891,741 cases and 28,938 deaths.

Of the new cases, 19,598 were confirmed and 4,320 likely. The state reported 1,666,487 confirmed cases and 225,254 probable cases.

On Thursday, health officials said the state’s first case of a more contagious variant of the coronavirus, which is believed to have originated in the UK, was reported in Harris County. The patient had no known travel history, so officials believe the tension is already spreading in the state.

There are 13,784 COVID-19 patients in Texas hospitals – the most ever – including 4,058 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

The average positivity rate of seven days across the country for molecular tests, based on the date of collection of the test sample, was 20.7% as of Wednesday. State health officials said the use of data based on when people were tested provided the most accurate positivity rate.

For antigen tests, the positivity rate for the same period was 12.4%.

Tarrant county

Tarrant County on Thursday reported 2,444 cases of coronavirus and 15 deaths.

Seven of the youngest victims were residents of Fort Worth: a man in his thirties, a man in his 40s, a man in his 60s, three men in their 70s and a woman in her 90s.

The other victims were two residents of Arlington, a man in his 60s and a woman in her 70s; two North Richland Hills residents, a woman in her 80s and a man in his 90s; A Bedford woman in her 80s; A Crowley woman in her 70s; A ruthless man in his 70s; and a Cellar man in his 60s.

Thirteen of the victims had underlying health conditions, officials said.

The newly reported cases bring the province to 167,732, including 144,103 confirmed cases, 21,185 probable cases and 120,658 recoveries. The death toll stands at 1,576.

According to the numbers on Thursday on the country’s dashboard, a record 1,528 people were hospitalized with the virus.

Collin county

The state on Thursday added 892 cases of coronavirus and nine new COVID-19 deaths. The province has now posted 54,623 cases and a death toll of 397.

No details about the latest victims were available.

Of the new cases, 637 have been confirmed and 255 likely. Collin County recorded 48,488 confirmed cases and 6,135 probable cases. According to state data, the province recorded 42,829 repairs.

The province’s coronavirus dashboard offers only total hospitalizations, now at 551.

Denton county

Denton County reported 690 cases of coronavirus – 669 of which are active – and four new deaths Thursday.

The latest victims were two men from Lewisville, in their 40s and 80s, a man from Corinth over 80 and a man from Denton over 80 who lived in Carriage House Assisted Living.

The newly reported cases bring the province to 42,095, including 13,342 that are active and 28,525 recovered. They also increase total molecular cases to 34,382 and antigen cases to 7,713.

The province’s death toll stands at 228.

There are a record height of 225 COVID-19 patients admitted to the hospital, the province reports.

The Texas Department of Public Health has taken over reporting for these other North Texas counties. In some provinces, new data is not reported every day.

The latest numbers are:

  • Rockwall County: 7,300 cases (6,130 confirmed and 1,170 likely), 59 deaths.
  • Kaufman County: 10,300 cases (9,018 confirmed and 1,282 likely), 134 deaths.
  • Ellis County: 14,578 cases (12,873 confirmed and 1,705 probable), 180 deaths.
  • Johnson County: 12,350 cases (10,984 confirmed and 1,366 probable), 174 deaths.
