Canada’s political leaders are commenting on riots that erupted against Donald Trump stormed the US Capitol on Wednesday.
‘There’s an important election process unfolding in the United States, and I think we all want it and need to unfold it properly and peacefully. So we definitely hope things calm down, ‘Trudeau told NEWS 1130.’ We will continue to watch closely. ‘
Canadians are deeply upset and saddened by the attack on democracy in the United States, our closest ally and neighbor. Violence will never succeed in dominating the will of the people. Democracy in the USA must be maintained – and it will be so.
– Justin Trudeau (@JustinTrudeau) 6 January 2021
The prime minister made a statement on Twitter, saying “Canadians are deeply upset and saddened by the attack on democracy in the United States.”
“Violence will never succeed in dominating the will of the people. Democracy in the US must be maintained – and it will be. ”
The horror that is unfolding in Washington is frightening and it was incited by Donald Trump.
He can end it now, but refuses to do so.
Democracy should not be intimidated.
The violence must end.
– Jagmeet Singh (@theJagmeetSingh) 6 January 2021
NDP leader Jagmeet Singh shared a tweet saying the “terror” that had occurred in Washington was “incited by Donald Trump” and “the violence must end”.
The storming of the Capitol Building is an astonishing onslaught on freedom and democracy. I am very sad to see how chaos grips our greatest ally today.
– Erin O’Toole (@erinotoole) 6 January 2021
Conservative leader Erin O’Toole called the storming of the American Capitol “an astonishing attack on freedom and democracy”.
I follow the evolving situation in Washington DC with great concern. Moments like these emphasize the importance of respect for the rule of law and the peaceful transfer of power – principles on which any sound democracy depends. #uspoli #USCapitol
– Annamie Paul (@AnnamiePaul) 6 January 2021
Annamie Paul, leader of the Green Party of Canada, tweeted on Wednesday that “such moments underscore the importance of respect for the rule of law and the peaceful transfer of power – principles on which any healthy democracy depends.”
Events taking place in Washington today are disturbing and appalling. The American Capitol is one of the global centers of democracy – this violence and attempt at insurgency after a free and fair election is unacceptable. Democracy must prevail and I am confident that it will apply.
– John Tory (@JohnTory) 7 January 2021
Toronto Mayor John Tory tweeted that what happened Wednesday was “disturbing and appalling.”
The scene that takes place in the American Capitol is nothing short of awful.
Our hearts go out to the people of Washington, DC and all Americans as they defend their democracy against this harsh, hateful attack.
– Andrea Horwath (@AndreaHorwath) 6 January 2021
Andrea Horwath, leader of the NDP in Ontario, called the scene at the US Capitol on Wednesday “horrific”.
“Our hearts go out to the people of Washington, DC and all Americans because they are defending their democracy against this harsh, hateful attack,” Horwath tweeted.
The mob stormed the American Capitol amid chaotic violence, with one person shot dead.
This comes after the US president said he would “never concede” to Joe Biden’s victory in the US election.
“We will never give up. We will never concede. That will never happen, “Trump told a group of supporters near the White House. ‘You do not concede if there is theft involved. Our country has had enough. We will not take it anymore. ”
Trump has since given his first acknowledgment that his term as US president is coming to an end, saying there will be an “orderly transition on January 20.”
“Although I completely disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts confirm me, there will be an orderly transition on January 20,” Trump said in a statement.
While the violence continued to unfold in the U.S., Canadians on Wednesday turned to social media to share their thoughts on the situation.
The USA #kapitolhill crisis is very telling.
Make no mistake if it’s a BLACK LIFE SAKER, there will be dead bodies everywhere – black and brown bodies.#Tromp produced this attack on democracy. THIS is a PEAK white privilege.
THIS IS AWFUL. My ❤ is my American family

If the events at the # Kapitol do not talk to the actual system of #witteoorheersing in the 21st century in the US, then I do not know what to do.
– Yadesha Satheaswaran (@YadeshaS) 6 January 2021
It’s time for @ Twitter to stop allowing @realDonaldTrump to use their platform to continue inciting violence and attacking democracy by deleting the account of this fraud and banning it permanently. Make anything less # Twitter attentive. Enough is enough. Do the right thing.

We here in Canada know how much damage was done by one gunman who stormed parliament in 2014. Imagine the terror being felt on Capitol Hill now. It. is. Insane. #cdnpoli

When I look at what’s happening to the American Capitol, I can honestly say that I do not know if I will ever set foot in the US again. Truly heartbreaking what is happening to that country. # Capital building # CapitolRiot

As the night wore on, “As a Canadian” began to trend on Twitter, with many calling for this horrific event to happen in Canada as well.
As a Canadian … I acknowledge that white supremacy is also Canadian.
There are literally protest marches in various cities across the country.
Do not be confused … white supremacy is as Canadian as maple syrup.
– Naheed Dosani (@NaheedD) 6 January 2021
As a Canadian, I know that white supremacy is just as Canadian as Tim Hortons.

The only tweets ‘As a Canadian’ should be about how this can happen here as well and what we need to do to prevent it. pic.twitter.com/JhR5zIl5Iv

The fact that ‘as a Canadian’ is going on while there are real pro-Trump protest marches BEFORE THE VANCOUVER ART GALLERY OF THE SECOND says so much about our collective denial and smirk. pic.twitter.com/cFIlZaQcTi
