UFC fighter Irwin Rivera was arrested on Thursday on two counts of attempted murder, according to an incident report obtained by ESPN.
He was booked ET just after noon ET after being arrested by the Boynton Beach police station and is being held without bail according to online jail records.
Boynton Beach Police Department spokeswoman Stephanie Slater told ESPN that Rivera is accused of stabbing his two sisters.
According to the report of the incident, police officers in Boynton Beach found two women – one 22 and the other 33 – with multiple stab wounds. The younger woman had wounds in her back, head and arm. The parent had wounds to her back, face, arms and hands. Both were alive and rushed to a hospital.
One of the sisters told police they were staying with their brother, Rivera, in one of his spare rooms, and they woke up when Rivera stabbed them repeatedly with a knife, according to the report.
Rivera fled the scene. Police contacted him around 7 a.m. Thursday morning and according to the report, Rivera said, “I killed my sisters.” According to the report, Rivera told police that he entered his sisters’ bedroom while they were sleeping and stabbed them with a ‘brass knuckle knife’. Rivera told police he believes he killed his sisters, and he did so because it was his goal, which was told to him by a ‘higher power’.
In a statement, the UFC said it was investigating the “extremely worrying” situation and would not offer a fight to Rivera at the moment.
“The UFC is aware of the recent incident with Irwin Rivera and has since received information from his management that he is exhibiting behaviors that are consistent with mental health issues,” the UFC statement read. “The allegations are extremely worrying and the organization is currently gathering additional information. The investigation is continuing and all possible next steps, including disciplinary action or medical attention, will be determined after the case. Furthermore, UFC has the management of Rivera informed that he would not be offered a fight at this time. ‘
