HOUSTON A newly sworn congressman from the Houston area was praised on Wednesday for his role in trying to stop a mob that stormed the American Capitol and force a break in the voter turnout.
U.S. Representative Troy Nehls (R-Dist. 22), seen in a photo with a blue shirt, was at the forefront with law enforcement in the House of Commons in an effort to keep protesters at bay, days after he took his oath. of the office.
“What’s going on here right now is non-American,” Nehls said as the Capitol was occupied by protesters. “It’s a holy house.”
When family members were evacuated to safety, Nehls was left behind.
“Initially, I told them this is where we need to be,” Nehls said. “I’m an old sheriff from Texas and I have to stand here with my brothers and sisters in my arms.”
Nehls stood at one of the barriers to keep the mob out of the living room, next to law enforcement officers who had their guns drawn. Through a broken window, Nehls said he tried to negotiate with the protesters, hoping to persuade them to stop.
“I was wearing my Texas mask,” Nehls said. “They said, ‘You’re from Texas and you have to be with this. “I said, ‘I’m fine, and I’m all Texans, and I’m all about the Constitution and individual and personal freedom, but to me it’s criminal what you’re doing here today,” Nehls said. .
U.S. Representative Al Green (D-Dist. 9) was on his way to the Capitol in the nearby office of Rayburn, a few minutes from the room of the house, when he encountered police and was told to take shelter immediately. .
“It scares me enough to worry about what’s happening to my country,” Green said.
Green spoke to KPRC 2 via Zoom while locked in his office. He said that although he believed in peaceful demonstrations, the chaos that engulfed the Capitol indicated an uprising against the government.
“It could be something close to sedition,” Green said. “I’m very scared we’ll get there, if not there. We cannot allow this to become the norm when it comes to the transfer of power. It can be detrimental to our democracy. ”
