Health authorities in Portugal are investigating the sudden death of a pediatric surgery assistant in Porto, who was allegedly in ‘perfect health’ when she received the Pfizer vaccine against the coronavirus.
The mother of two, who was identified on Monday as Sonia Azevedo, 41, worked as a surgical assistant at the Instituto Português de Oncologia (IPO), an oncology hospital in Porto. She was one of the 538 health workers at IPO who received their first dose of Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine last Wednesday. Azevedo ate New Year’s Eve with her family and was found dead in bed the next morning.

“I want to know what caused my daughter’s death.” her father Abilio told the Portuguese tabloid orreio da Manhã. He described her as a “Well and happy” person who “Never drank alcohol, ate nothing special or unusual.”
Azevedo was so proud to be one of the first to receive the vaccine, and she changed her Facebook profile photo to reflect that. “Covid-19 vaccinated” she writes under a selfie with her face mask.
“We do not know what happened. It all happened quickly and without explanation, “ Azevedo’s daughter, Vânia Figueiredo, told the newspaper. “I did not notice anything else in my mother. She was good. She only said that the area where she was vaccinated hurts, but that is normal … “

Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine first in the world to receive emergency use authorization from WHO
The Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine against the new coronavirus is so far the only one granted by the World Health Organization for emergency use, paving the way for its widespread use by UN agencies and other transnational health agencies.
The IPO has issued a statement confirming and expressing Azevedo’s death “Condolences” to her family and friends.
“The explanation of the cause of death will follow the usual procedures in these circumstances,” added the hospital. The autopsy of Azevedo was scheduled for Monday.
Portugal, with about 10 million inhabitants, has so far reported more than 427,000 cases and more than 7,100 deaths attributed to Covid-19.
