So far, three of the DLC characters from the Fighter’s Pass Vol. 2 was revealed for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on Nintendo Switch. In the two years since the game’s release, many attachment theories have been devised to figure out how Nintendo chooses the game’s DLC fighters, but Vol. 2 proved that it is difficult to guess what the cut might make. A number of these theories have been uncovered over the past year, and it makes fans realize how difficult it is to figure out director Masahiro Sakurai’s plans for the play!
One attachment theory that has persisted online is that third parties will no longer receive DLC fighters. The Super Smash Bros. franchise expanded on the previous few entries to include third-party fighters, but Nintendo was wary of how many characters from outside publishers had to be added. Both Microsoft and Square Enix have received DLC fighters Eventually, in the form of Banjo-Kazooie and Steve for the former, and Hero and Sephiroth for the latter. Sephiroth’s inclusion also overturned a theory that Nintendo focuses exclusively on heroic characters from third-party publishers, as opposed to villains.
Another attachment theory unleashed by Fighter’s Pass Vol. 2 was that the presence of a Spirit in the game meant that the character would not appear as a playable warrior. The first fighter revealed for this DLC series was Min Min, a character who debuted in ARMS. Few Few have previously appeared as a Spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but became a full-fledged warrior and gave hope to other characters currently in the game as Spirits.
Although Spirits can no longer be seen as a way to unravel playable fighters, it seems that Mii Fighter costumes are still indicative of characters who will not make it into the game via DLC. ComicBook.com has predicted that Geno will not make the cut in Fighter’s Pass Vol. 2 after the revelation that Sephiroth would be included in the play. A few short days after this article went live, Nintendo unveiled a Mii Fighter skin for the character. King K. Rool is a playable character who first appeared as a Mii Fighter skin, but it was in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U / 3DS. The character made the cut in the next game and proved that there is (ultimate) hope for those who are added as Mii Fighter skins.
One theory that has yet to be refuted is the Amiibo theory. Fans use the release dates for Amiibo figures based on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to guess right when the majority of DLC fighters would be revealed. The theory is not foolish, but it seems pretty accurate. Readers can find out more about this here.
At the end of the day, it seems that Nintendo and Masahiro Sakurai will always make the call that they feel is good for the game, no matter what fans think will be the case. It’s fun to speculate and create these types of theories, but at the end of the day, it seems like the DLC fighters of the game are a lot harder to guess than anyone expected!
