Two of the most award winning games of the 2010s are The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Red Dead Redemption 2. Both have inspired the open world video games that have come since then, but it is also possible that they can learn from each other. Nintendo has not released another global game since Red Dead Redemption 2release, and according to one developer, the Breath of nature development team looked to Rockstar’s cowboy game for inspiration.
As such, Red Dead Redemption 2 could influence Breath of the Wild 2 in some important ways. One mechanic who can make the transition good is the camp system, a new concept that would adapt really well.
The connection between Breath of the Wild 2 and Red Dead Redemption 2 was first established in 2019. In an interview with IGN, series producer Eiji Aonuma was asked what the younger developers working on the project are playing. “[Something] I have heard that many people play Red Dead Redemption 2, “he said.
While he did not indicate how the Zelda can be affected by Red Dead Redemption 2, he did point out how Skyrim had a massive impact on the first game. It clearly took some clues from Skyrim ‘open nature, but Aonuma name calling Red Dead Redemption 2 suggests that the game could be a kind of impact on the sequel.
If there to the mechanics of Red Dead Redemption 2 which can work well in Breath of the Wild 2, the camping system is an excellent candidate. In Red Dead Redemption 2, Arthur Morgan’s gang stays mainly in a camp. In this place, players can communicate with other characters and start a quest, play mini-games, change Arthur’s appearance, and even donate money to improve the game.
It was a new system, but it still has a lot of room for improvement. The camp is in the course of Red Dead Redemption 2, to make progress feel less valuable. Upgrading the camp is also never necessary for the story, making the activity feel more tangible than it should have been.
As Breath of the Wild 2 can find a way to address these issues, the game may have a better version of this system. If Zelda does not travel with Link, she (along with other characters) can stay in a larger camp on the map. Players can visit this place to get quests, meet different characters and get upgrades, just like in Red Dead Redemption 2.
As Red Dead Redemption 2, players must also be able to upgrade their camp Breath of the Wild 2. Doing so will not only make it bigger and more beautiful, but will also provide more facilities and upgrades for using Link. If it is never destroyed or moved, this progress will feel more meaningful than in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Another improvement could be to reward players with special weapons or abilities that will be good against bosses or the last game. Doing so will make the camp mechanic feel much more intrinsic Breath of the Wild 2 and will encourage players to actually engage a lot with the mechanic, other than Red Dead Redemption 2.
Game developers are constantly learning from each other and the best games on the market, so it’s no surprise that a very award winning or bestselling title like Red Dead Redemption 2 would affect the sequel to Breath of the Wild. It just needs to be seen if this is happening with the camp system or another part of the country Breath of the Wild 2‘s design philosophy.
