Jets fans can count the seconds until Adam Gase is no longer the head coach, but Bill Belichick does not think there is anyone better for the job at Florham Park.
Prior to Sunday’s game with the Jets, the Patriots’ longtime coach asked questions about the team he worked for just before coming to New England, as well as fullback Sam Darnold. Belichick has let it be known how strongly he thinks of Darnold, who has apparently fallen back in his second and third NFL seasons, and that he does not think the QB can be in better hands.
“I do not think anyone can coach him better than where he is,” he told reporters on Wednesday.
Gase, who is heading 9-22 with the Jets on Sunday’s game over two seasons, admitted earlier this month that he believes Darnold’s fight was on him and the coaching staff. It is widely believed that Gase’s final game with the Jets will be on Sunday’s final season.
Through 11 games this season, Darnold has scored just eight touchdowns with nine distinctions. He missed four games this season due to a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder.
“I do not think there is a shortage of talent or playing ability,” Belichick said of Darnold. “… He is an athletic man with a big size, a big arm, hard to pack in the pocket, a good prospect and he is well coached.”
