Mr. Barr resigned in December. But behind the backs of Acting Attorney General Jeffrey A. Rosen, the president with the acting Chief Justice of the Department, Jeffrey Clark, and a congressman named Scott Perry, devised plans to push Georgia to its results too invalid, to investigate Dominion and bring a new case to the Supreme Court which disputes the whole election. The agitation suddenly came to a halt when Mr. Rosen, who was to be sacked according to plan, assured the president that department officials would resign en masse.
This leaves the certification of Congress as the most important occasion.
Mr. McConnell worked for weeks to keep his members in line. In a conference call in mid-December, he urged them to keep the two Republican runaway candidates out in Georgia and protect them from a difficult standpoint.
When Mr. Hawley stepped forward, according to Republican senators, Mr. McConnell at least hoped to keep him isolated.
But Mr. Cruz works with cross-purposes and tries to force others to sign a letter outlining his circular logic: Because polls show Republicans’ “unprecedented allegations” of fraud convinced two-thirds of their party that Mr. Biden stole the election, it was Congress’s obligation to at least postpone the certification and order a ten-day audit in the ‘disputed states’. Mr. Cruz, along with ten other objectors, released the letter Saturday after New Year.
Mr. McConnell knew that Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas, among the most conservative Republicans, intended to speak out publicly against the spectacle. Now the majority leader Mr. Cotton called, according to a Republican familiar with the conversation, and encouraged him to do so as soon as possible. Mr. Cotton responded quickly.
It amounts to a testament contest within the Republican Party, and tens of thousands of Trump supporters gathered in Washington to send a message to those who may defy the president.
The protest started new brands, the March after Save America, and other groups joined in, including the Republican Attorneys General. Its policy wing, the Rule of Law Defense Fund, promoted the event in a call saying, ‘We will move up to the Capitol building and call on Congress to stop the robbery’, according to a poll that by the progressive research group Documented.
